Dilatation & Curretage
Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a procedure to remove tissue from inside your uterus. Gynaecologists perform dilation and curettage to diagnose and treat certain uterine conditions — such as heavy bleeding — or to clear the uterine content after a miscarriage or abortion.
How & Why- D&C
In a dilation and curettage, your doctor uses small instruments or a medication to open (dilate) the lower, narrow part of your uterus (cervix). The Doctor then uses a surgical instrument called a curette, which can be a sharp instrument or suction device, to remove uterine tissue and all the content within the uterus..(d&c)
Unusual Bleeding
Excess bleeding, completely unnatural for the lady.
Post Menopause bleeding
Any bleeding spotting after menopause needs evaluation
Abnormal Pap
Abnormal endometrial cells seen on Pap Smear for cervical Cancer Screening
Miscarriage
After an Abortion or Miscarriage - done to clear uterine contents
Molar pregnancy
A tumor formed within uterus and mimicks pregnancy
Polyps
Cervical and Endometrial polyps - Abnormal growths mostly non malignant
What to expect during the Dilation & Curretage
You would lie on your back with your legs on supports. Your gynaecologist would insert the speculum to open the vagina and then inserts a series of rods ( dilators) to increase the size of the uterine opening. Finally, curette is inserted to remove the contents of the uterus. Usually it lasts less than 10 minutes D and C
Arrange someone to take you home after D&C
Dilatation & Curretage (D&C) procedure is done in a hospital or your Doctors Clinic, and you would need to come fasting. You would receive sedation and need to stay for a few hours in the hospital. Hence you would need somebody to accompany you to the hospital and back home.
D & C is one of the common procedures done in my Gynaecology practice. "Dnc"- It is pretty simple and with almost no risks.
